Microsoft still believes in Skype and says it's used by millions of people each month for chats, calls and video calls. The recent update improves reliability and performance across various platforms. It also resolves permission issue on iPad, fixes button alignment in the Calls tab on Mac, eliminates large spaces between contacts in compact mode on Mobile, removes call option visibility from the Copilot chat on iOS, corrects market selection for channel mute/unmute actions. Besides, Microsoft removed all ads from Skype. But it doesn't mean that Skype is now non-profit. It still earns on cheap international voip calls and local numbers.

Microsoft has announced that on October 14, 2025 Project 2016 and Project 2019 will reach end of support. The only recommendation to customers - is to upgrade to cloud-based Microsoft Planner. Recently Planner became the primary Microsoft's project management solution and Project for the web now does not accept new registrations in favor of Planner. Launched as simple collaboration tool for Office in 2015, Planner absorbed the functions of Project and To-Do app in Microsoft Teams and now can scale easily from collaborative task management to robust project management, empowering everyone, from information workers to frontline workers to project managers. It also includes AI Copilot that helps to create buckets and tasks based on your planning goals, keep up to date on high-priority tasks, potential risks and team availability.

In a move that could only be described as the sort of thing you'd expect from a giant, universe-straddling tech company, Microsoft has politely informed the world that support for Exchange Server 2016 is coming to a dramatic close. On October 14, 2025, to be exact, it will vanish into the ether, much like your last attempt at finding a file you swore you saved. The company encourages everyone to scuttle over to the cloud, where presumably everything will be just a tad less confusing. For those brave souls determined to cling to the notion of running their own email servers, there’s nothing to look forward to except Exchange Server 2019—unless, of course, you’re waiting for the mythical Exchange Server Subscription Edition, which Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, assures us will appear “sometime in the early part of Q3 of 2025.” If you're lucky enough to be on Exchange Server 2019, upgrading should be as painless as upgrading ever is. But if you're still hanging onto 2016, get ready for a journey akin to building a spaceship out of old cereal boxes, where entire new infrastructures must be forged and your mailboxes shuffled to their new cosmic homes.

OpenAI has introduced a new method to interact with ChatGPT - an interface it calls “canvas.” The product opens a separate window, next to the regular chat window, with a workspace for coding projects. Users can create code directly in the canvas, then highlight sections of the work to have the model modify. Canvas will be available for ChatGPT Plus and Teams members. The new interface offers comparable features to Anthropic’s Artifacts, launched in June and the viral coding companion, Cursor. OpenAI is racing to match competitor offerings and release entirely new capabilities in ChatGPT, as a way to grow its paid user base.

Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, has unleashed upon the world the standalone Microsoft Office 2024 suite and—brace yourself—this includes a new and (allegedly) improved version of Outlook, for both Mac and PC. Now, when you search for that long-lost email or the attachment you swore you saved, Outlook 2024 will miraculously return more relevant results—though what "relevant" truly means remains a cosmic mystery. Messages, attachments, contacts, calendar entries—they're all there, somewhere. And, because the universe is kind (sometimes), it even throws in new tools for organizing meetings, including the profoundly sensible ability to automatically shorten them (mercifully). Mac users, ever the special breed, can now personalize swipe gestures in their email lists—because who doesn’t want to left-swipe an email into oblivion? Of course, if you want all these wonders, it'll only cost you $249.99 for the Office Home or Business 2024 package, which, as a bonus, grants you the mystical right to use Outlook commercially. Lucky you.

Commvault, the data protection and management software firm, has acquired data backup and recovery provider Clumio. Commvault CEO Sanjay Mirchandani views Clumio as a complement to Commvault’s existing “cyber resilience” solutions for software built on AWS. Now, he says, Commvault can provide enterprises with greater options to safeguard and restore their data and cloud-native applications. AWS-dependent or not, the data backup and recovery industry is enormous, which undoubtedly influenced Commvault’s acquisition decision. According to market research firm KBV Research, the global data backup and recovery market was valued at $12.9 billion in 2023, growing at an annual compound growth rate of 10.9% from 2017 to last year.
