Obsidian is a personal knowledge base and note-taking software application that operates on Markdown files. It allows users to make internal links for notes and then to visualize the connections as a graph. It is designed to help users organize and structure their thoughts and knowledge in a flexible, non-linear way. Enables bi-directional linking for easy navigation between notes.
Coda and Obsidian are both web-document/knowledge organization software. They support markdown syntax for formatting notes, allow for cross-linking between documents, support for third-party plugins to extend functionality.
But Coda (launched in 2019) is wiki system for teams, focuses on collaborative document creation and project management. It includes built-in tables and databases with formulas, similar to spreadsheets. It integrates with other work tools (e.g., Google Calendar, Slack).
Obsidian (2020) is primarily a note-taking app for personal knowledge management. It stores all notes locally on the user’s device, with optional cloud sync and features a graph view to visualize note interconnections. Obsidian is usually used by knowledge workers, writers and researchers.
