Facebook Messenger and Viber are two popular messengers that support text, voice and video messaging, allow to share photos, videos and files and work on multiple platforms iOS android, Windows, Mac. They support group chats and group video calls, offer end-to-end encryption for secure messaging.
But Facebook Messenger (launched in 2011 as a standalone app) is deeply integrated with Facebook and Instagram accounts and used primarily for communication of users in these social networks. It's widely used by businesses for customer service and marketing through Messenger bots.
Viber (2010) owned by Japanese company Rakuten, also offers low-cost international calling to non-Viber users via Viber Out. It requires a phone number for registration and contacts syncing provides more privacy features like disappearing messages and hidden chats.
