Fongo vs TextNow

Low-cost, personal and small business communication solutions.

TextNow
The TextNow app gives you the same nationwide phone service starting at $0/month.
Fongo and TextNow are, on the surface, both communication services offering calling and messaging, but the way they go about it is as different as a lemon is from a confused baboon. Fongo, you see, is a VoIP provider obsessed with Canada. If you happen to be within those chilly yet polite borders, Fongo will let you call and text to your heart’s content using the internet, all without bothering the cellular networks—who are, frankly, quite tired of your demands. The service is free, but like a mischievous raccoon at a campsite, it will poke you with ads unless you decide to pay for the privilege of having them vanish.

TextNow, however, is the cousin that’s wandered a bit farther afield, offering its VoIP calling and texting services across both the United States and Canada. Not satisfied with mere Wi-Fi, it dares to use cellular data as well, letting you communicate almost anywhere there’s a flicker of internet. It too is ad-supported, because nothing in life is truly free except unsolicited advice and the occasional pigeon. But pay a little extra and you'll enjoy voicemail transcription and other delightful novelties like call forwarding—features that the average Fongo user might only dream of during a particularly exciting nap.

Where things get even more interesting is in their ambitions. Fongo has a laser-like focus on the average individual just trying to avoid exorbitant phone bills, while TextNow has grander dreams. Not content with personal users alone, it extends its metaphorical hand to small businesses, offering tools that make it look like a VoIP service wandered into an office and decided to get serious. With business plans, call management and team collaboration, TextNow fancies itself the responsible adult in the room—if the room is North America and the conversation is about free phone calls.
