Google Workspace and ONLYOFFICE are both productivity suites, which is a rather unassuming way of saying they are the finely-tuned tools we now use to collectively shuffle digital paperwork about, while pretending the universe isn’t as bewildering as it actually is. Google Workspace, formerly known as G Suite—perhaps because “G Suite” sounded suspiciously like a kind of novelty bathroom set—boasts a galaxy of cloud-based apps like Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides. These are splendidly collaborative, allowing teams to fiddle about with the same document at the same time, which is either a miracle of modern technology or a brilliantly disguised group panic attack.
ONLYOFFICE, by contrast, takes a somewhat more cautious approach to the cosmos. While it offers many of the same tools, it seems to feel that entrusting everything to the cloud is a bit like leaving your front door key with a very friendly but slightly forgetful extraterrestrial. So, it allows users to host the whole thing themselves, offering a delightful sense of control over one's data—at least until one realizes that managing servers is much like herding cats, except the cats are invisible and live in a far-off dimension of IT problems.
In short, Google Workspace is the sort of thing you’d use if you wanted to work together in the cloud, sending documents back and forth like excited digital frisbees. ONLYOFFICE is for those who prefer to keep their frisbees close, on-premises, or in a bunker, where they can be certain no intergalactic hitchhikers—or tech conglomerates—are meddling with them. Both have their place in the bewildering bureaucratic ballet we now call "productivity."
