Microsoft Exchange Server is the server side of a client–server, collaborative application product developed by Microsoft. Exchange's major features consist of electronic mail, calendaring, contacts and tasks; support for mobile and web-based access to information; and support for data storage.

Microsoft Exchange and iRedMail are both email servers with groupware features like calendaring and contacts. They support SMTP, IMAP and POP3 protocols, allow integration with third-party email clients (e.g., Outlook) and offer web-based administrative interfaces.

But old-good Microsoft Exchange (initially released back in 1996) is a proprietary software targeted primarily at large enterprises and features deep integration with other Microsoft products (e.g., Active Directory, Office 365).

iRedMail (2007) - is China-based free open-source software for small and medium business. It's built on standard open-source components (e.g., Postfix, Dovecot, OpenLDAP).
