PRTG
PRTG Network Monitor is an agentless network monitoring software. It can monitor and classify system conditions like bandwidth usage or uptime and collect statistics from miscellaneous hosts as switches, routers, servers and other devices and applications.

Nagios and PRTG are both network monitoring tools, but comparing them is rather like comparing a Swiss Army knife to a very friendly, slightly overenthusiastic robot. Nagios, for starters, is open-source, which means it’s a bit like being handed an enormous box of Lego pieces and told to build your dream castle – assuming, of course, your dream castle includes monitoring every possible network service, device and application known to mankind. Its flexibility is practically boundless, though that also means you’ll need a bit of wizardry (or at least a very good manual) to get it humming along, but the community, bless them, will cheerfully offer you any number of plugins and add-ons for whatever bizarre needs you may have.

PRTG, on the other hand, is more like being handed a fully assembled spaceship and being told, “Look! It flies and we’ve already mapped out your course to Alpha Centauri!” Commercial, yes, but gloriously user-friendly, PRTG presents you with a dazzling array of pre-configured sensors and an intuitive interface so simple even a Vogon could figure it out. Its dashboard is so easy on the eyes that you might almost forget it's tracking the very lifeblood of your network, from bandwidth to devices to those mysterious "applications" that seem to need constant babysitting.

In short, if you're an IT sorcerer with a penchant for conjuring custom monitoring spells, Nagios is your wand of choice. But if you'd rather have a sleek, friendly tool do most of the thinking for you while you sip tea and contemplate the absurdity of it all, PRTG will be your trusty robotic companion.
