Proxmox Virtual Environment is a complete server virtualization management solution, based on KVM virtualization and containers. Powerful and easy to use - Complete server virtualization management with KVM and containers.
Proxmox and oVirt are both rather clever bits of open-source virtualization, much like having two competing galactic civilizations trying to outdo each other in the race to virtualize everything but the kitchen sink (though one suspects they’ll get to the sink eventually). Proxmox, which hails from a place known as Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH—don’t ask, it’s just somewhere over in the Debian nebula—has managed to combine both KVM and LXC into one neat little package. This means you can run your virtual machines and containers together in harmonious digital bliss, which sounds suspiciously like trying to have your cake and eat it too, only this time, it actually works. It even comes with a web interface so user-friendly, it might as well offer you a cup of tea while you're at it. Throw in live migration and clustering and you've got yourself a delightful setup for small to medium-sized businesses who don’t want to fuss about too much.
On the other hand, we have oVirt, which hails from the Red Hat quadrant, renowned for its serious-minded approach to virtualization. oVirt doesn’t bother with containers; it’s all about virtual machines, virtualized data centers and other terribly important-sounding things. It’s got a modular architecture, which means you can tinker with it endlessly, adding and removing bits like a bored super-intelligent being rearranging stars. This, naturally, makes it the choice for large enterprises or organizations who like their virtualization complex, scalable and thoroughly customizable—much like trying to build a virtual spaceport with all the bells and whistles, when you really just wanted a parking spot for your spaceship.
So, which should you choose? Well, if you’re a small-to-medium galactic outpost with a preference for simplicity and no desire to re-engineer the virtual universe, Proxmox might just be your cup of tea. But if you’re running a vast interstellar conglomerate with Red Hat stamped all over your fleet and you like your virtualization as customizable as a spaceship’s infotainment system, then oVirt might be more your speed. Either way, you’ll have plenty of virtual machines buzzing about, doing whatever it is virtual machines do when we’re not looking.
