2021. Bridgit secures $24M to provide construction companies with workforce intelligence
Bridgit, a “workforce intelligence” technology firm focused on the construction sector, has secured $19.4 million in Series B funding. Designed for construction workforce management, the cloud-based Bench has become Bridgit’s flagship product. This is not surprising given the widespread labor shortage the industry has faced. Bench aims to assist general contractors in planning and expanding their workforce, utilizing project data to enhance bidding and staffing decisions and predicting project pipelines. The outcome, according to Bridgit, is improved productivity and profitability.
2021. CostCertified lands $8.45M to build the Amazon for construction
CostCertified, a Canadian startup offering real-time, interactive residential construction estimates, secured $8.45 million in a seed funding round. Essentially, CostCertified functions as a price configurator tool for construction, but the company’s ultimate aim is to create the “Amazon for construction.” CostCertified enables contractors to send an interactive, shoppable estimate to homeowners, allowing them to select options during a project and view the impact on the price immediately. 2019. Fieldwire raises $33.5M to give PlanGrid and its new owner Autodesk a run for their money
Fieldwire, which develops task management software for construction teams on commercial projects, has secured $33.5 million in Series C funding. The success Fieldwire is experiencing might give the team at Autodesk some concern, given the increasing challenge it poses to PlanGrid, a competitor that Autodesk acquired last year for $875 million. As for its future plans, Fieldwire — which already allows users to view floor plans in real time, communicate with each other, track punch lists, schedule tasks and file reports — indicates it’s focusing on 3D architectural drawings, which puts it in closer competition with PlanGrid. PlanGrid also provides construction productivity software and is supported by its parent company, Autodesk. 2018. Autodesk buys PlanGrid for $875 million
Autodesk, having peered into the chaotic, blueprint-laden vortex of the construction universe, has decided to snag PlanGrid for the galactically significant sum of $875 million. This cosmic rendezvous is all part of Autodesk’s grand scheme to digitize everything that currently requires pens, rulers, and a startling amount of arguing. PlanGrid, the proud keeper of 12,000 customers and 120,000 paid users (and apparently a participant in over a million construction projects across this peculiar planet), is set to turbocharge Autodesk’s quest to streamline construction workflows for anyone and everyone who might scribble on a blueprint. The companies, in their infinite optimism, believe that this merger will result in a one-stop construction solution so complete it could make a Vogon weep, growing faster under Autodesk's vast umbrella than PlanGrid ever could have while bravely stumbling along on its own. Standard acquisition pitch, really, but with bigger numbers and shinier promises.
2017. Oracle buys construction management software Aconex for $1.6b
US tech giant Oracle acquires construction software firm Aconex in a $1.6 billion transaction. This represents Oracle’s second acquisition of a cloud-based construction software company to date. Last year, it bought contract and payment management platform Textura for $663 million and integrated it with its own construction management software, Primavera, to create the Oracle Construction and Engineering Global Business Unit. Construction projects involve numerous components, such as various contractors and suppliers, complex building regulations and extensive paper documentation, making management both costly and time-consuming. This presents an opportunity for the tech sector. Recently, several startups have emerged to modernize the construction industry, including Fieldwire, PlanGrid, Net30 and UpCodes.
