Important news about Online ERP software
2024. SAP to acquire digital adoption platform WalkMe for $1.5B
In a move that might make your average Vogon bureaucrat weep with joy, SAP, the galactic overlord of enterprise software, has swooped in with a cool $1.5 billion to acquire WalkMe, a platform that originally set out to make the torturous business of navigating websites a bit less like finding your way through the Total Perspective Vortex. WalkMe, which started with the modest aim of offering real-time, on-screen guidance, has since grown into a digital behemoth that not only helps you figure out which buttons to click but also holds your hand through enterprise app features, onboardings and all those moments when you'd rather face a Bugblatter Beast than learn a new CRM system. This delightful automation doesn’t just spare human resources—it also gathers data on end-user behavior, offering timely nudges just before users hurl their keyboards into the nearest black hole. SAP clearly sees WalkMe’s ability to automate this kind of contextual, in-app support as a crucial asset for its empire of enterprise clients, which—presumably—still prefer to avoid the fate of Arthur Dent's endless confusion.
2023. Series, which aims to replace ERP systems, lands $25M
In a peculiar corner of the software galaxy, where startup aspirations meet financial wizardry, there exists a company called Series. With a freshly minted $25 million in funding, it ambitiously endeavours to untangle the chaotic mess known as "ERP systems" – those sprawling behemoths that seem to demand more time and patience than most businesses can muster. Rather than chaining its users to an unwieldy, one-size-fits-all monster, Series offers a marvelously modular approach, where clients can whimsically pick and choose the tools they need, like a menu at a particularly eccentric diner. Whether it’s payroll, contract wrangling, business payments, or even taming the wild world of treasury management, Series provides each feature in neat, separate web apps that companies of all shapes and sizes can customize to their heart’s content – and, as it turns out, to their business’s specific stage and ambitions.
2022. Chinese ERP startup Dianxiaomi raises $110M
In a galaxy not so far away, nestled among the bustling algorithms and ceaseless data flows of modern e-commerce, there exists Dianxiaomi, a startup that dares to make the arcane art of selling rather more decipherable for Chinese exporters. Having wrangled a princely sum of $110 million in a Series D funding, Dianxiaomi crafts a suite of ERP software—a veritable toolkit for the enterprising vendors of Wish, Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Shopee, Lazada, and similar digital bazaars. Their mission? To assist small-to-medium-sized sellers, especially those grappling with no more than 5,000 orders daily, to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of global trade. Not content with dominion over their homeland, this SaaS pioneer has embarked on an overseas adventure, launching tailor-made ERP solutions for sellers in Southeast Asia and Latin America. With a reported 1.5 million users spanning 50 e-commerce platforms, Dianxiaomi has carved out a notable fanbase, including a legion of 430,000 users in the thriving markets of Southeast Asia alone.
2022. Open-source/cloud ERP provider Axelor raised €10M
In a universe not entirely unlike ours, a certain Axelor—a provider of open-source, low-code BPM wizardry designed to help hapless humans build sophisticated ERP and CRM applications without breaking too much of a sweat—has managed to raise a rather galactic €10 million in Series A funding. This nifty outfit already boasts over 1,000 tools and an impressive customer lineup that includes, in no particular order of cosmic importance, PSA, Ministère de la Justice, Hauts-de-Seine, and Trenitalia. Axelor’s curious method of doling out solutions through both open-source and commercial licenses gives organizations a handy advantage. They can now assemble modules with ease using its low-code platform—sidestepping the untidy labyrinth of code embraced by its rival from the Belgian sector, Odoo.
2021. Microsoft announces new tools to modernize supply chain and manufacturing
Microsoft is introducing a new manufacturing solution called the Microsoft Cloud for Manufacturing, along with Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Insights, a tool created to provide customers with enhanced visibility into their supply chain routes and intelligence to address issues as they arise. The manufacturing cloud is intended to gather these signals and alert manufacturers when they might require additional supplies. The Supply Chain Insights tool is specifically crafted to chart supply chain routes and identify potential issues that could impact the delivery of critical raw materials before bottlenecks occur. Together, they are designed to offer greater agility and adaptability to manufacturing companies.

2021. Katana raises $11M to be the SaaS powering manufacturing entrepreneurs
Imagine, if you will, a universe where small-to-medium-sized manufacturers stumble about in a haze of spreadsheets, legacy systems, and general befuddlement, trying to keep their inventory and production on track. Enter Katana, an Estonian startup that has popped into existence like a cosmic answer to the unasked question of "Is there a better way?" With $11 million in Series A funding—a figure calculated to raise eyebrows and set wheels in motion—Katana has unleashed a manufacturing-focused ERP designed not just to organize but to revolutionize. Labeling itself the “entrepreneur manufacturer’s secret weapon,” this clever contraption swoops in to help companies escape the clutches of outdated tools and embrace a slick, plug-and-play future. In an age where creators of everything from custom cosmetics to artisanal electronics are flocking online to sell directly to consumers, Katana has timed its grand entrance perfectly, surfing the wave of an independent creator boom. In short, it’s ERP, but with a snazzy cape and a mind to change the manufacturing world—one inventory mishap at a time.
2021. Xentral nabs $20M to help online-facing SMBs run back offices better
Xentral, a German startup that creates enterprise resource planning software encompassing various back-office functions for online small businesses, has secured $20 million in Series A funding. The company’s platform currently includes services such as order and warehouse management, packaging, fulfillment, accounting and sales management. Most of its 1,000 clients are based in Germany and include direct-to-consumer brands like YFood, KoRo, the Nu Company and Flyeralarm. The challenge for Xentral will be to determine how and if it can attract more businesses and leverage the tools it offers, especially as other competitors are also targeting the same market. (Other players in the ERP space for small businesses include online payments provider Sage, NetSuite and Acumatica.)
2020. Microsoft introduced its customer data platform inside Dynamics 365
Microsoft, in a move that is either profoundly ingenious or simply inevitable (possibly both, knowing Microsoft), has unveiled a colossal update to its Dynamics 365 universe—a realm that now appears to expand at roughly the same pace as the universe itself. The gist of it is this: businesses are swimming in data, so Microsoft is handing out towels in the form of a revamped customer data platform (CDP), which aims to mop up and organize every drop of customer information from every system you’ve ever known or wished you hadn’t. The platform, affectionately dubbed Customer Insights, promises to make sense of these swathes of customer interactions so companies can delight customers with experiences as tailor-made as a warm cup of tea on a damp, dreary Thursday. Of course, Microsoft is far from alone in this noble venture; heavyweights like Adobe, Salesforce, and SAP are also in the ring, each with their own flavor of “we know your customer better than you” wizardry. But for now, Microsoft’s betting their fresh spin on data mingling will nudge them a little closer to marketing enlightenment.
