Important news about Freelance marketplaces for business

2021. South African talent marketplace OfferZen gets $5.2M

In a galaxy not so far away, nestled in the burgeoning tech universe of South Africa, the improbably dynamic tech talent marketplace known as OfferZen has triumphantly secured a stellar €4.5 million ($5.07 million) in Series A funding. Picture this: software developers and engineers, much like hitchhikers with laptops instead of towels, sign up as candidates to be meticulously curated and showcased on OfferZen’s digital platform—a kind of interstellar bazaar for tech talent. These developers, orbiting the marketplace for a precise and slightly whimsical four-week window, are virtually guaranteed a barrage of attention from eager companies vying for their skills. Of course, there’s a rule, because even in the zaniest parts of the cosmos, there must be some order: developers are only beamed aboard for permanent roles. So long, freelance gigs—and thanks for all the code.

2021. Fiverr acquires freelance management toolset Stoke Talent for $95M

In the grand, swirling cosmos of professional freelancing, where platforms like Fiverr and Upwork orbit hungrily around the bright star of opportunity, a new gravitational wrinkle has appeared. Just as LinkedIn dipped its corporate toe into the freelance pool last week with Service Marketplace, Fiverr, not to be outdone, declared with much galactic pomp that it’s acquiring Stoke Talent for a rather celestial $95 million. Stoke, as it turns out, is the kind of toolset that doesn’t just help companies find freelancers but also wrangles them into tidy compliance with features for onboarding, payment processing, and budget tracking — the sort of thing any hyper-organized intergalactic overlord would dream of. While Stoke will continue spinning in its own independent orbit, its integration into Fiverr's universe is a clever ploy to ensure employers and freelancers alike get locked into its gravitational pull, even when those freelancers aren’t strictly sourced through Fiverr itself. The result? A tightening of Fiverr's grip on the freelance multiverse, one Stoke-empowered contract at a time.

2021. LinkedIn rolls out its freelance services marketplace

LinkedIn is opening up a new front in the job market for freelancers with its Service Marketplace, a new feature that will let people advertise themselves for short-term engagements to those looking to hire people for such roles, competing against the likes of Fiverr and Upwork for sourcing skilled knowledge workers. The launch of its freelancer platform is coming alongside a few other key updates from LinkedIn around other job-hunting tools, underscoring how the company is looking to adapt to new current trends in the job market and how we work. They include new search filters to find jobs (permanent jobs, that is) that are remote, hybrid or on-site; and these can also now be indicated on your “Open to Work” indicator if you have that turned on to invite recruiters to contact you. Alongside this, you can now also check out companies’ vaccination requirements as part of how you evaluate jobs (if the employer has indicated those details itself).

2021. Malt raises $97M for its freelance marketplace for developers

Malt, which offers a platform for developers, data scientists, designers, project managers and others in related fields to find temporary job opportunities, has secured €80 million. The company has so far gathered 250,000 freelancers in its network, with 30,000 businesses utilizing this talent pool to fill positions. Clients include companies such as Unilever, Lufthansa, Bosch, BlaBlaCar, L’Oréal and Allianz. It also collaborates with traditional consultancies like McKinsey to help them source individuals for projects. In total, the company has managed approximately €300 million in business since its establishment in 2013.

2021. Worksome pulls $13M into its high skill freelancer talent platform

Worksome, which operates a platform to connect freelancers seeking professional opportunities with employers needing solutions to find and manage freelance talent, has secured a $13 million Series A. Worksome focuses on assisting medium to large companies—those working with at least 20+ freelancers simultaneously—by filling roles within teams rather than facilitating project outsourcing. The company reports gaining traction with large enterprise clients that have traditionally used Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to oversee and compensate external workforces—and sees employment agency giants like Randstad, Adecco and Manpower as ripe for disruption.

2021. Creatively raises $5M to help creative professionals showcase and find work

Creatively — a startup that assists designers, photographers, illustrators and other creative professionals in showcasing their portfolios and finding their next opportunity — has raised $5 million. The startup reports that there are now over 125,000 creatives on the platform, while 650 companies (including HBO, Tom Ford, SKIMS, Nickelodeon, Ro, CNN and The Gap) have used it for recruitment. Businesses are seeking to hire creatives directly but often lack the network and resources to find qualified, diverse talent. Creatively addresses this gap. Their rapid growth in under a year is impressive and we’re thrilled to be a part of the team.

2021. Temp staffing service Jobandtalent takes $120M

Spain’s Jobandtalent, a digital temp staffing agency startup that operates a dual-sided platform connecting temporary workers with employers needing casual labor in industries like ecommerce, warehousing, logistics and manufacturing, has secured €100 million (~$120M) in Series D funding. On the tech front, its platform leverages learning algorithms to match temps with jobs, accelerating the hiring process. It also provides a CRM for employers, integrating analytics to track workforce performance in real time — which it claims helps monitor workplace satisfaction, reduce turnover and track metrics like absences and tardiness.

2021. Collective launches a SaaS marketplace for freelancer teams

Freelancers who collaborate effectively in teams are the focus for Collective, a French startup that’s launching a SaaS marketplace. Collective contends that the indie ‘collectives’ trend has only been accelerated due to the coronavirus pandemic— with companies facing more uncertainty seeking more resilient and flexible solutions. For teams of skilled independent workers, the appeal of Collective lies in its promise to merge the advantages of working in an agency—because its SaaS platform automates numerous back-office functions like proposals, invoices, contracts and payments—with the flexibility of remaining freelance and thus able to select projects and clients.

2021. Iziwork raises $43M for its temporary work platform

French startup Iziwork, which is developing a platform aimed at enhancing temporary employment, has secured $43M in funding. Iziwork operates a marketplace for temporary jobs; 2,000 companies in France and Italy utilize the platform and 800,000 candidates have used the app to find job opportunities. It can be seen as a tech-enhanced version of the traditional employment agency. Candidates can sign up directly via the mobile app. The app then provides personalized recommendations based on your profile (95% of positions are filled within four hours). Additionally, all your documents are managed through the app.

2021. Jobandtalent raises $108M for its workforce-as-a-service platform

Jobandtalent, a digital temporary staffing agency that operates a dual-sided platform connecting temporary workers with employers requiring regular casual labor in sectors such as transport and logistics, has secured an additional €88 million in its Series C round. Jobandtalent reports that over 80,000 workers have utilized its platform to obtain temporary positions in the past year across the seven markets where it operates in Europe and LatAm (specifically: Spain, U.K., Germany, France, Sweden, Mexico and Colombia); meanwhile, 750+ employers are registered to “consistently manage a significant portion of their workforce,” including XPO, Ocado, Saint Gobain, Santander, Bayer, eBay, Huawei, Ceva Logistics and Carrefour.
