2024. Microsoft Project to merge into Microsoft Planner
Microsoft has announced that on October 14, 2025 Project 2016 and Project 2019 will reach end of support. The only recommendation to customers - is to upgrade to cloud-based Microsoft Planner. Recently Planner became the primary Microsoft's project management solution and Project for the web now does not accept new registrations in favor of Planner. Launched as simple collaboration tool for Office in 2015, Planner absorbed the functions of Project and To-Do app in Microsoft Teams and now can scale easily from collaborative task management to robust project management, empowering everyone, from information workers to frontline workers to project managers. It also includes AI Copilot that helps to create buckets and tasks based on your planning goals, keep up to date on high-priority tasks, potential risks and team availability.
2021. Oracle integrates Primavera with SAP ERP
Further streamlining enterprise project portfolio management, Oracle unveils Primavera Inspire for SAP 7.0 for improved integration between Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management and SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) project-related modules. The solution allows executives and project managers to achieve measurable ROI by aligning material, resource, schedule and financial data between SAP’s Materials Management, Project System and Plant Maintenance modules and Oracle’s Primavera P6. Primavera Inspire for SAP 7.0 enhances project planning and execution by providing project managers with the visibility needed to more effectively manage and utilize resources across corporate divisions and departments. The integration also ensures that large capital projects are completed on schedule and within budget. Primavera Inspire for SAP 7.0 assists organizations in enhancing the management and forecasting of material, cost, schedule and resource needs for routine maintenance.
2021. Clarity 15.9 improves UX and external content integration
As part of its ongoing collaboration with Broadcom, CA introduced Clarity 15.9 for both on-premise and SaaS users. This release continues to enhance the value we believe the new UX can offer to our clients. The updated version enables the use of channels to integrate external content (such as Power BI) into your investment perspectives. You can now utilize channels to incorporate content from other sources, such as an external site, application, or Classic PPM context-sensitive investment reports into Clarity. You can engage with the content and make informed business choices without leaving Clarity. Other upgrades include the capability to approve or return multiple timesheets in bulk, enhancements to custom objects via API, the ability to add Goal attributes to Roadmap Items and view the Goal for each investment. In the Staff module, users can now view actuals, estimates to complete, usage, remaining allocation and remaining availability as time-scaled values. This feature, along with the inclusion of Days as a metric in the staffing overview, are valuable additions to the Resource Management functionality.
2021. Planview acquires Clarizen and Changepoint
Planview has announced the acquisitions of two industry leaders: Clarizen, a global frontrunner in enterprise Collaborative Work Management and Changepoint, a top provider of enterprise Portfolio Management. As a result of the deal, Planview, Clarizen and Changepoint customers will gain access to a premier community of PMOs, PPM and Professional Services Automation (PSA) experts. The expanded portfolio of solutions will equip customers with the tools and resources needed to better plan and execute their most critical initiatives. This merger is expected to be transformative for the industry and has received positive feedback from customers so far. The closing of these acquisitions follows Planview’s acquisition in December 2020 by TPG Capital and TA Associates, whose investment has been focused on accelerating Planview’s growth and vision for Agile and PPM for Enterprises. Clarizen and Changepoint are the company’s largest acquisitions to date and mark a significant first step in Planview’s growth strategy for 2021.
2020. Adobe acquires project management startup Workfront for $1.5B
Adobe has just announced that it is acquiring marketing workflow management startup Workfront for $1.5 billion. The acquisition provides Adobe with additional online marketing tools to integrate into its Experience Cloud. This tool assists companies in managing intricate projects within the marketing department (or other areas of the organization, as well). Workfront’s clients include Home Depot, T-Mobile and Deloitte and the two companies share 1,000 mutual clients out of Workfront’s 3,000 total customer base. In fact, it offers APIs that connect to Adobe Creative Cloud and Experience Cloud, two segments of the company’s product suite that marketers often utilize.
2018. Broadcom acquires CA Technologies for $18.9B
Semiconductor producer Broadcom has finalized a deal to acquire CA Technologies for $18.9 billion. CA Technologies, which develops both cloud-based and traditional enterprise software, could assist in broadening Broadcom's portfolio. As a global leader in mainframe and enterprise software, CA's solutions support organizations of all sizes in developing, managing and securing intricate IT environments that boost productivity and enhance competitiveness. CA is mainly recognized for its business-to-business (B2B) software, with a product lineup focused on project portfolio management (Clarity), Agile software development, DevOps and computer security software across various environments including mainframe, distributed computing, cloud computing and mobile devices. CA operates in 40 countries and currently holds over 1,500 patents worldwide, with more than 950 patents pending.
2016. Microsoft unveiles Project Server 2016, inpired by Cloud
Microsoft has announced the general availability of Project Server 2016, which delivers substantial project and portfolio management (PPM) benefits to its on-premises clients. Microsoft states that its performance and scalability are inspired by the cloud — from an engineering perspective, Project Server is developed from the same code used to provide the company’s cloud service. In terms of functionality, the Project Server 2016 release appears largely similar to the 2013 version, but it enhances features in resource management with new resource engagement heat map displays, improves transparency in the interaction between project planning and line planning and removes the Resource Plan from the Project Web App interface as Microsoft Project 2016 now includes this function. Microsoft has also released a content pack for Power BI Dashboards, which integrates with its cloud-based Project Online offering.
2014. SAP unveiles Portfolio and Project Management 6.1
SAP EPPM (Enterprise Portfolio and Project Management) is the business solution from SAP that supports the planning and execution of projects. The latest version of SAP Portfolio and Project Management addresses critical functional gaps highlighted by user groups, enhances user experience and usability with non-disruptive improvements and further integrates project management with portfolio management. The new features include updated portfolio item dashboards (replacing old ALV lists with new WebDynpro tables for better visualization, scrolling, filtering, dynamic column counting (similar to Excel behavior), multi-language support, display of archived portfolio data, search functionality for archived portfolio objects and usability improvements). The User Interface for object links in Project Management is now also utilized in Portfolio Management.
2014. Planview buys Projectplace to combine resource and project management
The U.S. enterprise resource management company Planview is acquiring Sweden’s Projectplace, the provider of project management tools. The advantages of the merger include geographic expansion – Projectplace gains easier access to the U.S. market while Planview extends its reach into Europe – as well as complementary product offerings. Additionally, Planview aims to develop a standout product that is unique in the market. Projectplace’s cloud-based software facilitates project-based collaboration, whereas Planview’s advanced tools are geared toward executive decision-making. Consequently, users will be able to handle project execution and Kanban with Projectplace and then follow up and plan in Planview Enterprise.
2008. CA launches SaaS project portfolio management suite
CA has unveiled on-demand versions of its Clarity Project and Portfolio Manager (PPM); Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Manager and Instant Recovery tools, all available immediately. Jules Ehrlich, general manager at CA’s On Demand division, said the key benefits of SaaS are simple and quick deployment, a compelling financial model and discrete upgrades. Clarity PPM On Demand has been available to customers since April this year, but had not been formally announced until the show this week. The Chicago Department of Health is an early adopter of Clarity PPM On Demand. Pricing for Clarity PPM On Demand is from $18 (£12) per user, depending on the number of users and length of contract. “This could go up to $100 per user; the longer you sign up, the better deal you get,” Ehrlich said. “For GRC Manager On Demand it’s $500 per user. With Clarity, firms can have anywhere between 50 and 50,000 users."
