These surveys, while occasionally enlightening, are famously cumbersome to assemble, devilishly hard to scale, and ultimately only as reliable as the dodgy data that gets funneled into them. Enter stage left: a London-based startup by the name of Attest, a plucky purveyor of cloud-based, no-code wizardry that insists it has cracked this particular nut with a big-data solution. Bolstered by a fresh $60M funding boost—an amount that would make even the wealthiest Vogon blush—Attest boasts a gargantuan consumer database cobbled together from panels, groups, and perhaps the odd interdimensional focus group, totaling a jaw-dropping 110 million individuals across 49 countries. Their pièce de résistance? Any user, from survey novice to techophobic CEO, can concoct a finely-tuned survey in mere minutes and receive answers from their desired demographic faster than you can say, “Where’s my towel?”—24 hours, or maybe even sooner.

It’s as if Atheneum woke up one morning, peered into the vast cosmic void of corporate research, and thought, “You know what’s missing? A SaaS-powered, cloud-enabled, interview-and-survey-fueled bridge between tech-savvy businesses and the elusive secrets of stakeholder insights!” And so, with a hearty $150 million injection of funding (the sort of sum that makes accountants hum softly in satisfaction), it has set forth to offer a platform that melds technology with the uniquely squishy brilliance of human interaction. The idea, of course, is to let companies wrangle qualitative expert consultations, quantitative surveys, and big data products with the ease of a Vogon reciting poetry—only more palatable. But, naturally, the universe abhors a monopoly as much as it abhors a vacuum, and rivals like SurveyMonkey, Mailchimp, and the ever-ambitious titans of Salesforce and LinkedIn are poised to fling themselves into the “research-as-a-service” arena with the kind of enthusiasm that suggests they’ve got their own intergalactic schemes for helping businesses function just a little more efficiently—or at least look like they are.

Great Question, a startup aiming to make creating and engaging with their own panels accessible to all businesses, regardless of size, has secured $2.5 million in seed funding. The platform has been utilized to interview customers about product concepts and strategies, identify product-market fit, perform usability tests on UX designs and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing landing pages. Great Question offers nearly all the necessary tools for customer research — including survey templates, prototype evaluations, scheduling tools and transcription — in a single location, facilitating easy information sharing among teams. 2021. User Interviews, the CRM for qualitative user research, raises $10M



User Interviews, which has developed a CRM for product research teams to gather user feedback, has completed a $10 million Series A funding round. It often takes companies weeks, if not months, to conduct a study on user research. The company chose to create a platform that would source participants for research swiftly and efficiently, using an algorithm to match qualified, engaged participants with the client. The product became Recruit and operated on an à la carte model. To complement Recruit, the team also introduced Research Hub, a CRM and recruiting tool for research teams to manage their panels. To be clear, User Interviews doesn’t conduct the surveys or A/B tests themselves but rather assists companies in managing participants and logistics for those studies.


2020. UserLeap raises $16M to bring better qualitative data to Product managers



Product managers can only thrive if they can effectively utilize both quantitative and qualitative data. However, aligning the former with the latter and gathering high-quality data presents a significant challenge for organizations aiming to rapidly develop and innovate products. UserLeap believes it has discovered a more effective approach and has secured $16 million in Series A funding. UserLeap provides product teams with the capability to embed a small piece of code into their product that then delivers contextual micro-surveys to users directly within the product. The company claims these micro-surveys typically achieve a 20% to 30% response rate and sometimes even reach up to 90%. Additionally, the UserLeap dashboard analyzes the natural language from respondents and organizes the data. For instance, if one user mentions price and another mentions cost, those responses are grouped together.


2020. SurveyGizmo changes name to Alchemer

2017. Google Forms get intelligent response validation



Google revealed an update to its tool for creating online surveys, Google Forms. Among the new enhancements is a smart response validation feature that will automatically recommend the appropriate type of response validation for different fields. For instance, if you request an email address, Forms will suggest selecting the “Accept emails only” option. This also applies to URLs, age and similar fields. Forms users will now also have the ability to request file uploads from users outside their organization — provided that both your company and the respondent’s organization permit cross-domain file sharing in Google Drive. Additionally, Google is introducing a new question type: the checkbox grid. This allows respondents to choose from several options within a table. Also new in Forms are settings that can be applied to all new forms, such as automatically collecting email addresses. Users can now also rearrange their sections with just a few clicks.
